5C Learning Journey to Little India on 22 May 2013

We went on a Social Studies / National Education Learning Journey to The Little India on 22 May 2013.
We have learnt many new things about the Indian Culture. It was interesting to learn about the Indian food: Prata, Thosai and many sweet treats; Indian craft like Henna was especially popular with our class girls who tried on their hands. We walked from streets to streets, shops to shops and we were enchanted by the colourful display of Indian Sari and even Indian cooking herbs. We saw beautiful garlands in many Indian stalls too. We have also been to a mini Indian Cultural Centre to learn more about the occupations of the Indians in the olden days of Singapore. The Indians had truly contributed much to the building of our nation. It was a fulfilling trip indeed.

I also learnt about Thairu, a home-made yogurt which is very popular in Indian cooking, and about an famous Indian,Veerasamy. He was the first Tamil doctor in Little India and a street was named after him. I learnt that the name Serangoon means a black and white bird.I have enjoyed the trip and learnt alot of things.

  14. Little India is an ethnic neighbourhood found in Singapore that has Tamil cultural elements and aspects of other cultures. Little India lies to east of the Singapore River—across from Chinatown, located west of the river—and north of Kampong Glam. Little India is more commonly known as Tekka in the local Tamil community.

Little India is distinct from the Chulia Kampong area, which, under the Raffles Plan of Singapore, was originally a division of colonial Singapore where Tamil immigrants would reside under the British policy of ethnic segregation. However, as Chulia Kampong became more crowded and competition for land escalated, many ethnic Tamils moved into what is now known as Little India. (The Chulia Kampong district no longer exists as a distinct area.)
